Newsletter 9 Why enter art prizes?
Jan 16, 2023Why enter art prizes?
Entering an art prize can be anxious, artists are sensitive to rejection. But the rewards are enormous if you have a go.
- Even though you do not get selected at first, I encourage you to take risks and enter competitions
- Use the challenge to achieve a high level of excellence in your work
- Motivate you to try different subjects and not be afraid to experiment
- Perseverance is the key to achieving your goal
- Getting exposure to a wider audience
What do I do?
- Read the criteria. Is it a portrait, landscape, or anything else they are looking for
- Most importantly read the medium. Painting prizes do not include drawing but may include watercolor
- Size: make sure the size of the works is not above their limit.
Usually, the size must include the frame
- Have handy a CV and artist statement
- Enter and pay the fee on time, no late entries are accepted
- Most art prizes require a photograph of the work.
I get a professional photographer to professional photograph my artwork. Do not underestimate the importance of this
- Research previous accepted works this may indicate what the selectors are looking for, but if you think your work is fresh and better than previously selected, go for it!
I am a realist artist, but sometimes I paint a little out of my square and experiment
Go for it you have nothing to lose and do not be upset if you do not get in the first try, keep going
If I get selected, what do I need to know?
- Read the delivery instructions carefully, I often use an art courier as they can organize delivery with the gallery or venue directly
- Make sure your work has D rings and is securely framed for hanging.
- Label your work with your details clearly on the back
- Make up extra labels for the gallery to place on your work if not sold for return delivery, Include your phone number
- Place a copy of your entry form and any information on yourself. I usually include a business card or DLs
- There are also some online art prizes, good for self-confidence and overseas exposure but not usually a selling profile.
- Increase your pricing for well-established and high-profile competitions, you also need to cover your fright costs
- Attend the open if possible. This is a great way of networking, even better if you are awarded a prize, enjoy the experience you deserve it
